The legendary Pentagram studio in New York has designed an identification for the Covariant brand, an AI company that creates universal artificial intelligence.

This technology has the best chance of occurring in industries that manufacture, move and store things in the physical world. Robots are most often used in the automotive industry and other specialized production areas.

What the design process for the Covariant brand identity looked like.

Review - Covariant

The function of AI robots is limited to the repetitive movements to which they have been programmed. The movements of the robot can be very precise, but it will not cope with possible deviations or changes.

Creators Covariant They saw an opportunity to change that. They have carried out dozens of studies on deep imitation learning, deep reinforcement learning, and meta learning. The result is Covariant Brain - an artificial intelligence AI designed to work in a wide variety of environments and for multiple use. This is a big enough breakthrough that it could have a significant impact on the future of industries such as e-commerce and logistics.

The creators focused on an abstract visualization of the “covariant flow” that represents the learning process through the so-called “decision boundary”. This intelligent layer, which is the main component of neural network learning, always works in the background and changes in response to external data.

They collaborated on the project Luke Powell and Jody Hudson-Powell from the branch Pentagram in London. Their main motivation was to capture the breakthrough technology and reflect it in their brand identity. Dedicated app

Luke and Jody and the team built an app to create unique bitmaps and moving images. The form, time, complexity and color of the decision edges can be changed manually, and then the graphics can be exported in any size, length and format needed for each platform. This leads to an infinite number of publication possibilities, and most importantly - the brand has enriched itself with an excellent tool that will certainly allow it to unify promotional materials. The scope of work extends from a new website in a responsive version to printed materials, i.e. business cards, letterhead, etc.

About applications produced by designers for designers internal companies mentioned at the Element Talks conference Tom Bishop, it is worth listening.

It makes you think about what challenges we will face in the future, designing static layouts will not be enough. The client will expect a program thanks to which he will be able to export a texture, photo, sign, etc. compatible with his style guide.

Symbolism

The Covariant logo and the signet imitate curves, twists and decision boundaries - this relationship is reflected in the animated version of the signet and in the typography. The typeface is a geometric-grotesque combination imitating a logotype. The icons complete the uniform image by incorporating loops overlapping lines reflecting the logo and decision boundaries. The identity of the brand is emphasized by friendly colors consisting of four basic colors that are a combination of man (red, pink, light blue), with a more serious and industrial petrol blue.

Animation

The animated looped videos were made by Geoffroy de Crécy, whose realistic illustration style was chosen to accurately depict three use cases in Covariant robots — order picking, sorting and placement.
